THE CLOCKS were changed this weekend in London, so for a precious few days we will get lighter mornings but in return darkness will descend soon after 4PM. Not to worry, here’s nearly two hours of great music to brighten your day. Can I highlight a few? Cover artist Monique Bingham provides beautiful vocals to Ralf Gum’s “Little W 12th St.”. Also listen out for Baumgartner and Sunhatch’s “Reach”. I love the superfunky “See another day” by Palava and Focus Audio’s “Stand up” is quite simply excellent. But there’s so much more!

SUMMER is still hanging on as I write here in London, so welcome to DEF 61 which reflects that mood with the sultry sound of sophisticated house and soul. This is two hours of excellent music including our cover artist Steve Appleton who must be destined for cross-over success very soon. And a very special mention for the beautiful track “I’m in love with my life” by Peyton vs Arkoss. WELCOME to DEF 60, another slightly extended (almost 90 minutes) of delicious soulful house. As many of the tracks might not be considered mainstream or signed to major labels I’ve tried to include download sources where I know them. Although I hope you enjoy them all, I’d just like to highlight a few: Beta One featuring cover artist Carlos Morgan’s “Pashmina Girl”, is just, simply, beautiful. And for something slightly more up-tempo I can recommend “You give me” by The K Program, and “The dark” by Rominie vs Tuccillo, but why not decide for yourself? Here’s the full track list:

CERRONE's in DEF 57 and if that’s a new name to you then check out this video from 1976 on You Tube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hK_9VXiyC3Y For me his “Love in C minor” really symbolised the start of disco and in 2009 Joey Negro has been at those original tapes and produced an authentic update of “Cerrone’s Paradise”. This is everything disco should be about, over-the-top, sexy, camp, fun, frothy . . . more here http://www.cerrone.net/ And “Cerrone The Podcast” on iTunes.
But this pop-dance set starts off with UK chart-topper Pixie Lott’s “Mama do”. I love the vocal on Wild & Klosman’s “Save me” which segues into an Ian Carey update of the Sunloverz “Summer of love” from their new EP “Love will set you free” http://www.myspace.com/sunloverz And if that wasn’t enough to make you feel hot and sticky then “I love the sunshine” by Alan Connor and Mike Melange will.
The lovely Shena appears again in DEF 57 and cross-over success must be just around the corner for this hard-working UK soulstress who is almost singlehandedly bringing disco back to life. Her current single “My fantasy” features here with a mix by 7th Heaven then she provides vocals to Jonni Black’s “Take me higher” which sounds incredibly similar to Disco International’s “Ready 4 more”. Is it the same sample? http://www.shena.co.uk/
Don’t forget to check out the F*Monday radio show Sundays 8-10pm UK time http://createradio.net/
Here’s the full track list:
(1) Mama do (Uh oh uh oh) [Bimbo Jones] PIXIE LOTT
(2) Save me [Original] WILD & KLOSMAN
(3) Summer of love [Ian Carey] SUNLOVERZ
(4) I love the sunshine [Beltek] ALAN CONNOR VS MIKE MELANGE

(8) Take me higher [Original] JONNI BLACK VS SHENA

Welcome to DEF 56 which has quite a soulful vibe. Our cover artist Nate James features twice and in fact it’s the same track but in two different mixes. Unusual I know, but the versions of “Labour of love” are markedly different and, in my opinion, both excellent. Let me know what you think. The main mix is part of Nate’s “Revival” album of covers and “Labour of love” was originally a hit in 1987 for Scottish brothers Pat and Greg Kane, known as Hue and Cry. You can hear more of Nate’s covers and buy them here tinyurl.com/djqyjg My favourite track of the set is Richard Earnshaw’s mix of “U got the love” by New Mondo featuring Morrisson. New Mondo are actually production duo DJ MFR and Vincent Kwok, while Morrisson hails from San Francisco. You can download this and other mixes here www.traxsource.com Enjoy!

WARNING! There’s some seriously good stuff in here, a set which includes funky electro, techno, and rock-edged dance tunes. My advice is turn it up, max the bass, and let the music do the rest. Enjoy! Cover artist New Yorker Sylvia Tosun won a scholarship to Juillard before she turned her hand to singing and writing dance music. She says she can sing in ten languages which was probably what lay behind her project “Anthem” on which she re-records ten national anthems in their native tongues produced as pop and dance tracks. I couldn’t find a copy to listen. If you do, please let me know. http://www.sylviatosun.com/ I love The Cube Guys remake of “Be free” which haunted us back in 2001. The Cube Guys are Milan-based Italian DJ/Production duo Roberto Intrallazzi and Luca Provera. But my favourite track of the set is the gritty guitar-based “Get some” by Soundpusher from Chicago, otherwise known as Scott Gerbosi and Dino Zisis. These guys have recently been remixing Janet Jackson, Justin Timberlake, and Jordin Sparks, so someone thinks they’re good and I agree. Maybe “Get some” will be their own breakthrough track. It’s available now from Beatport http://www.beatport.com where it was most recently number one in the electro chart. There’s an unmistakeable hook in “Too hot” by Belgian DJ Rick Restanques, But what is it? If you recognise it, put me out of my misery and let me know. Finally I’ve included an old track from 2007 “Your music is killing me” by the Young Punx. I re-discovered it recently and reckon they should re-release it. On their blog you can download their own sets and exclusive remixes. http://www.yourmusiciskillingme.com/ I'm off to Portugal now so see you in a few weeks.
Here’s the full track listing:
(1) Your love still haunts me [Dub Kay 5am mix] JOSEPH

MAKE some me time and slip into DEF 54, a deliciously soulful 63 minutes of pure musical magic. Cover artist David Mensah slides in with his sophisticated “My day”. http://davidmensah.com/ In this set you’ll find a double offering of the formidable house production duo Jed Set and U-Ness, http://www.myspace.com/unessandjedset firstly on “Rocking with attitude” as Jed Set and later on “Never let u back” as U-Ness. Jed Set is actually Frenchman Eddy Joncoux and his pal U-Ness is Youness Raji. A little later I’ve included another mix of the beautiful “Higher high” by Ralf GUM. This one is much deeper and ethereal than the one you’ll find on DEF 52. Meanwhile Siberian label Kolonki Recordings bring us the Deep Vintage Mix of Pars Johannson’s “Your sin” http://www.kolonki-recordings.com/ind/ And finally the set begins to speed up and toughen up as we join Jesse Saunders before we get you ready for some serious movement with “Who you’ll be” by Gabrielle Vezzola http://www.myspace.com/vezzolagabriel
Here’s the full track listing:

THIS week’s set is a light frothy funky disco affair and who better to have on the cover than former Miss Washington Kristine W who next month releases her new album “The power of music”. Later on you’ll spot another mix of Chaka Khan’s “Disrespectful”, and I do think that this one, from Red Top, is the best of the lot. Other disco classics making a reappearance are Lonnie Gordon’s “Catch you baby” which in 1991 was originally called “Gonna catch you”; “Another sleepless night” by Shawn Christoper (also from 1991); and another mix of “Clothes off”, from Jermaine Stewart. My favourite of the set is probably “Wud if I could” by Anthony Wright; a great vocal performance.
Here’s the full track listing:
(1) Love is the look [Love To Infinity] KRISTINE W
(2) Wud if I could [Cahill] ANTHONY WRIGHT
(3) ‘Til you drop [Thomas Rich] ORAL TUNERZ
(4) Disrespectful [Red Top] CHAKA KHAN & MARY J BLIGE
(5) Heartbreak (Make me a dancer) [Bitrocker] FREEMASONS FEATURING SOPHIE ELLIS BEXTOR
(6) Love crazy [Vocal] WARREN CLARKE FEATURING TARA MCDONALD
(7) Release me [Moto Blanco] AGNES
(8) New in town [Bimbo Jones] LITTLE BOOTS
(9) Catch you baby [7th Heaven] LONNIE GORDON
(10) Another sleepless night [Out Of Office] MAD8 VS SHAWN CHRISTOPHER
(11) Waiting for the night [Extended] FULL TIME SUPER STARS

FEELING hungry? Fancy a house-music feast? Permit me to be your humble tune-waiter, serving up some of the finest dishes I’ve heard in a long time. Your first course is from Italian DJ Pagany, working with his pal Roby Arduini, and together known as House Bros with their new single “Let the music” on Distar Records. It’s got a kind of old school feel with some lush strings and soulful vocals. We then segue into AEDJ, the straightforward combination of Avi Elman and Danny J with vocalist Lifford. Catch that great bass line. The oddly-named Australian d-t3ch bring us the deconstructed “Back to the 90s” featuring funky horns and driving bass combined to hypnotize. Elliot Wright’s “Upright” is a recent release on Endemic Digital and is a great retro-electro-funky track. You can catch the whole Endemic crew in The Loft at Ministry Of Sound on Friday 29th May 2009, with Scott Harrington, Ryan Briggs, Tom Lennox, Moonface and Tim Cook. Un-Spanish-sounding Valencian DJ Kike Bronchal cooks up “Disco star”, a tasty jazz-tinged funky house track. Savour the pure house sound of Californian Nate Wollman’s “It’s just rhythm”. Loveslap Records’ Charles Spencer and Marc-Alan Gray’s debut album “Dreaming in colour” http://www.loveslap.com/ features the juicy “Pillow talk” before we experience the most pumped-up track of the set, the filthy “My girl” with Jason Heard vs Flashlight at the controls. One of my DJ heroes, the frequently mis-named Raul Rincon never disappoints and here he is with the Tune Brothers, Jochen Pash and Inusa Dawuda. Raul also graced our cover back on DEF 28 http://tiny.cc/fmonday28 Raul‘s oeuvre needs no comparisons but this is slick and intelligent dance-music like Faithless at their very best. Meanwhile disco is definitely back, and Ralph Gum’s updated century 21 mirror ball sound is showcased on “Higher high”. We finish with a recent track from the bonkers Nu Disco scenesters Tasmanian Disco Stampede. When I first heard their “Taking over” I thought ‘That’s Phonat’, and what a surprise - they’ve recently been remixing for him. So, chow down on a big buffet of choons: I can’t choose a favourite; they’re all delicious. Which one did you enjoy?

Here’s the full track listing:
(1) Let the music [Pagany] HOUSE BROS
(2) Don’t u wanna [Main Mix] AEDJ FEATURING LIFFORD
(3) Back to the 90s D-T3CH
(4) Upright [Original] ELLIOT WRIGHT
(5) Disco star [Main Mix] KIKE BRONCHAL
(6) It’s just rhythm [Gabriel Black] NATE WOLLMAN
(7) Pillow talk [Asad Rizvi] SPENCER GRAY
(8) Outerfunk [Original] HOUSETRAP
(9) My girl [Whelan & Di Scala Explicit Mix] JASON HEARD VS FLASHLIGHT FEATURING JASON HEERAH (! EXPLICIT LYRICS !)
(10) Party children [Warehouse Vocal] RAUL RINCON, TUNE BROTHERS, JOCHEN PASH & FEATURING INUSA DAWUDA
(11) Higher high [Ralf GUM Original Disco Attack Mix] RALF GUM FEATURING DANIEL THOMAS
(12) Taking over TASMANIAN DISCO STAMPEDE

We had a lovely time in Cyprus. The weather was just right; nice and sunny but not too hot. We walked and walked and were generally rather annoyingly healthy. We stayed at The Elysium just outside Paphos http://www.elysium-hotel.com/ which was beautiful. It’s expensive but we got a credit-crunching deal with a discount and free evening meals. Probably ideal for a honeymoon as we saw several weddings during our stay. Off to Portugal in a few weeks.

DISCOTASTIC! Episode 51 is at the commercial end of my musical taste buds, the kind of soundtrack my neighbours across the road needed the other night. Should I have popped in and offered to DJ? Maybe next time. This set is packed with covers: the classic “Gypsy woman” given a credible makeover by French DJ Tristan Garner http://www.myspace.com/tristangarner Cheryl Lynn’s 1978 stormer “Got to be real” is brought up to date by UK DJ Groovesplitter, supported on vocals by our cover artist Shena, who you’ll notice appears twice in this set. And this year Mrs Shena Winchester is stepping to the front of the stage after years of providing backing vocals for numerous recording artists with her first solo album “One man woman” coming out in June. You can check it out here: http://www.shena.co.uk/ Listen carefully and you’ll hear beautiful echoes of the classic 70s disco sound. Meanwhile the first single “Can’t stop the rain” is remixed by 7th Heaven in DEF 51. Back to the covers, and in 1986 Jermaine Stewart’s “We don’t have to take our clothes off” was seen as a little risqué. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ID_N7rv-iN8 During his career Jermaine provided backing vocals for Culture Club and before that used to dance on Soul Train. Sadly, Jermaine died in 1997. Using the name Miami Starfish, it’s the Avalon Superstar team who pay homage to Jermaine in this set. And finally Shannon’s 1983 hit “Let the music play” is tranced-up by Bolton production trio Phil Jubb, Terry Higson, and Michael Chadwick, also known as Macutchi. I’m off to Cyprus, so will see you again with DEF 52 in a few weeks. Beijos F*

A HALF century of sets! Here’s DEF 50 and we kick off with the slightly mysterious London producer Soulpersona http://www.myspace.com/soulpersonamusic who’s currently working with Darien from Reel People and provides vocals on “Can’t hide”. Dutch DJ and producer Jaimy collaborates with Kenny D and Victoria Wilson James on the sophisticated “Never stop”. Proving that pure soul comes from many places check out ex-Soundgarden vocalist Chris Cornell’s “Part of me” http://www.chriscornell.com/ masterfully given club treatment by Swedish DJ Kleerup. Chris is currently touring in the US before starting a European tour in May. His only UK date appears to be at the Download festival. DEF 49 is right here with a slightly more up-tempo set to take us into the holiday weekend. First up is cover artist, DJ and producer Michael Woods from Hackney in North London. Michael, also known as Out Of Office, is gigging in Australia during April before stopping off down the road from me here in South London at the Coronet on 16th May. http://www.outofoffice.tv/ I think my favourite track of the set is Cahill’s “Sex shooter”. www.myspace.com/ilovecahill Cahill are UK trio Anton Powers, Tim Condran and Scott Rosser. This is funky electro at its best. Respect guys. In a similar vein the latest from Funkerman does not disappoint. Check out the held-back haunting vocal on this. The trippy “Moonshine rising” by Rod Carrillo and Ronnie Sumrall gave me goosebumps, before DJ Vitto’s “No stop” killer bassline got me really moving. The well-travelled Tortured Soul bring the mood down just a little with “Home to you”. Well they’re certainly not home in Brooklyn because this week they’re playing in Seoul (10th April), London’s Jazz Cafe on 8th May, and back in New York at the Highline Ballroom on May 19th. www.myspace.com/torturedsoul I’m sure I’ve mentioned before I’m a huge American Idol fan, and I’ve just got to add my voice to the chorus of fans for Adam Lambert. www.myspace.com/angelasoto2

THE BIG London clubbing weekend of the year is coming up and whether you’re venturing out every night or whether you’re enjoying the experience on your MP3 player, here’s the latest soundtrack to the weekend.

Listen out for President Obama’s speech floating gently above a laid-back groove thanks to Uness & Jed Set on “Change has come”. One of my favourites from this set is the funky and minimalistic “Don’t let it stop” by Davidson Ospina featuring DJN Project. Also worthy of mention is our cover artist Alec Sun Drae who provides vocals for “Do it like this” by Jake Island. Finally the excellent Sunday Morning mix of Dennis Wonder’s “Hold on” finishes things off nicely. Enjoy. See you again soon. X F*

AN UP TEMPO and commercial mix awaits you in DEF 46. I’m sorry it’s been a while but I’ve been crazy-busy and travelling. As a result some of these tracks have been in my box for a while, but they’re still definitely worth listening to.

We kick off with our handsome Dutch cover star Hugo Van Dyck. Check out more mixes of “Give my love a try” and all his laydeee friends at www.myspace.com/hugovandyck A few tracks later you’ll hear Anastacia return to her commercial best with a Moto Blanco remix of “Absolutely positively”. She’s touring Europe in June and July with four dates in the UK http://www.anastacia.com/news/0-6/uk-tour-announced It’s great to see Bimbo Jones http://www.bimbojones.com/ making a successful transition from DJ, to producer and now to band. The band’s website says Lee and Marc have been joined by the legendary Katherine Ellis on their excellent “And I try”. Meanwhile, if you check out Katherine’s biog you’ll find she’s either written or provided vocals for most of today’s top producers. Katherine’s on tour with the Freemasons in Australia right now. She’ll be at Sydney’s The Metro on 21st March; and the Ivy Pool on 22nd March. http://www.myspace.com/songsiren Russian dance music star Leonid Rudenko www.myspace.com/leonidrudenko brings us “Everybody” complete with one of those Fedde Le Grand-inspired girrllee vids featuring Charleene Rena from Hounslow. But Rudenko, why aren’t you in your own video enjoying all the pussycats? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=auF9ONmSUlQ Finally, check out some smooth sophisticated soulful house from Mystery and Matt Early http://www.coffee-n-creme.com/artists.html They say we can expect an album of their new material sometime this summer. I’m looking forward to it.

Come back again in a few weeks for DEF 47 which will be a more laid-back, chilled and minimal set. Until then, enjoy the music. X F*

SMOOOOTH. That’s how this set kicks off. But don’t be fooooled. Pretty soon it’s down to some serious movement of the house variety. I’M COOKIN’ – Episode 43 whips up the very best in new funky house, techno, minimal, and electro, and features new tracks from Cevin Fisher, M1, and Nowak.

Seamus Haji’s new remix of the classic “At night” by Shakedown has an epic build, and segues into an excellent re-tread of the Salsoul Nugget sample by DJ Bradd & Pepper Mashay, while Cevin Fisher’s “The cream always rises” is completely infectious. Later on I re-discover a couple of fantastic tracks hidden at the back of my box including “Slave” by Nadir: wow! This tune is so hot, it MUST be re-released.

Here’s the full track listing:

At night [Seamus Haji] Shakedown
Heaven [DJ Bradd's Salsoul Dub] DJ Bradd & Pepper Mashay featuring Salsoul Nugget

DEEP, chilled and minimal sounds dominate Episode 40’s cosmopolitan set.

And starting us off on our global house journey are two DJs/producers from Barcelona, Spain; DJ Elias and Evanz D with their blissed out “El sol.” Next we move into a slightly funkier American house mood by welcoming Los Angeles’ George Vibe and Jerry Martinez, known as The Funky House Tribe, with their “Release yourself”.

Then it’s to Eastern Europe and the deliciously deep “Sunrise 5am” by Romanian DJ and producer Mircea Madalin, better known as Allexinno. Go to his site http://www.djallexinno.ro/ to download his minimal, deep and electro mixes. (Some of the links are in Romanian, but I managed to navigate intuitively.)

Meanwhile, you can download more soulful and funky mixes from Italian DJs Ciappy and Kid Creole. http://www.ciappydeejay.com/ In Episode 40 you’ll find Ciappy DJ with David Murri on the excellent “Winds of Victoria”.

We stop off in South Africa for Kent and Tumi’s “Hiya kaya” by Kentphonik before arriving down under for my favourite track of the set: “Deep down”. This is a deep and minimal track from Filippo Paviglianiti. Filippo, who records under the name J Nitti, is a native of Italy now living and working in Melbourne Australia. Enjoy. Here’s Episode 40’s full track listing:

El sol [Original] DJ Elias & Evanz D

THE LAST holiday weekend of the year is looming here in the UK and so to set us up here’s an excerpt from a set I produced a couple of weeks ago. I’m not sure that X Press 2’s “Lazy” is ready for the re-release treatment yet but nevertheless here it is. The Moto Blanco version shifts it from the chill-out to the funky main room. Other mixes in the package come from Mowgli, Freeform Five and Norman Cook. Meanwhile, Moby’s next single from his album “Last night” will be “Disco lies” out on 15th September, but in this set you’ll find “I love to move in here” which was released in the USA in July. I’ve used the best remix courtesy of my old favourite Seamus Haji. www.moby.com Check out the sample of Junior Jack’s 2003 “E samba” in Nick Corline’s “Orfeu”, though I can’t remember where the original Brazilian sample comes from. Do you know? http://www.myspace.com/nickcorlineakadjnick Next comes another version of La India’s “I can’t get no sleep”. Originally from 1985 I’ve served up a Da Freek mix which came out recently. http://www.myspace.com/india Puerto Riqueña India explains she crossed over “backwards”, originally recording in English for her dance tracks from the 80s and 90s, up to today when she records in her native Spanish. Are the Pussycat Dolls cool enough for you? Well, I slipped them in because the Digital Dog remix of “When I grow up” certainly got my attention. This is followed by an excellent version of “Sunchyme” by the Nightbirds. This epic track was originally recorded by English dance production team Dario G, and sampled 1985 soft rock/pop song “Life in a northern town” by The Dream Academy.

I’m in Berlin this weekend, so if you’re there too let me know fmonday@hotmail.com

Shuffle [Piano mix] South Of Roosevelt

I’VE BEEN busy travelling – mostly pleasure – but managed to grab a few hours to check out the new tracks in my in-box and mix up the very best for you. And I have to say I’m really impressed with the latest release from Canadian outfit Kwality Kontrol. http://www.myspace.com/kwalitykontrol I think this is the first time I’ve included so many tracks from the same artist in one mix. The four-track EP called “Redemption” is widely available including www.traxsource.com This is quality soulful house at its best.

I was delighted to see that fellow Londoner Chaka Khan is gigging again. 55-year-old Chaka, real name Yvette Stevens, lives in the leafy north London suburb of West Hampstead, and has owned a house in the capital for more than 15 years. On stage earlier this week, referring to London she said “It’s my home. It’s where I live”. So we’ve lost Madonna but gained Chaka Khan. Good trade I guess. In Episode 38 we feature one of the best mixes from the prolific set accompanying Chaka’s single “Disrespectful”. Chaka’s official site appears to be malfunctioning at the time of writing but the Jam and Lewis produced album “Funk This” is readily available online and in the shops.

Also check out the excellent blissed-out “A tu lado” by Moroccan/Belgian DJ Producer U-Ness featuring Robina. http://www.myspace.com/uness1 This is also available on the Hed Kandi “Beach House” CD. Ibiza sunset anyone? Then we segue into Jack Fresh’s “The best”, as the set gets deep and serious. http://www.myspace.com/loopfreaksrecords

I’m off to Berlin next, so if you’re close, shall we meet for a beer? I’d love to hear from you. Stay in touch, enjoy the sounds, and I’ll see you again in a few weeks. Love F*

SORRY it’s been a while, but I promise some excellent tracks in Episode 37’s up-tempo set. Kicking off is Northshore’s “Take me higher” http://www.inevitablerecords.co.uk/ which I think first appeared at the WMC a few months ago. Respect to M J White from North Carolina who here is providing vocals to Club 4 Life’s “I fly”. Currently M J is part of UK-based group Donatella Movement but see http://www.myspace.com/mjwhiteny for a variety of excellent house tracks including the deep “Rocking the house” and the tender “Like a butterfly”. Spot the re-working of Harry’s Afro Hut remix of “Flawless” emerging as the House Bros featuring Carol Jiani’s “Keep on”. http://www.myspace.com/caroljiani I also like Carol’s “Such a shame” where she works with DJ/producer Mark Wilkinson. The House Bros is actually Italian DJ, producer, and label owner Pagany. I’m sure you’ll recognise his other names Capella, 49ers and Superstar DJs. Pagany pops up later on “Show me how good” featuring Vale Ducros http://www.myspace.com/housebros Perhaps my favourite track of the set is “Una familia” by Italian Carlo Biondi AKA Carlos Rubio who in this small world also is signed to Pagany’s Distar label. Carlo’s classy slice of disco house borrows heavily from “Ooh I love it (Love break) by The Salsoul Orchestra. The Salsoul phenomenon had a major influence on today’s dance music sound http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salsoul_Records My favourite Salsoul track will always be “Spring rain” by Argentinian pianist Bebu Silvetti http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4YN-2Dj0uLU Later in the set you’ll recognise Pulse’s 1996 release “The lover that you are” as it is given a 2008 makeover by Marlon D and George Mena. Then Chicago group Midway Strangers bring us the aptly named “Call it deep”, because it is. And damned fine too. http://www.myspace.com/midwaystrangers French duo Mr Fuzz (Frederic Faupin) and DJ Rico are together known as Grantorino with “What you won’t do” which was first recorded by Bobby Caldwell http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GUKoWmeZraE Check out the Candy Apple Club Mix of diva Pepper MaShay’s “Pray for tomorrow”, and finally the beautiful voice of Joyce Elaine Yuille ends things with her “My best thing”. http://www.myspace.com/joyceyuille Enjoy. Here’s the full track list:
Take me higher [Star Foundation Dub] Northshore
I fly [Club] Club 4 Life featuring M J White
Keep on [Funk Mix] House Bros featuring Carol Jiani
Freedom [Halo & Jamie Thinnes Revisited Main] Rachel Claudio
Una familia [Club] Carlos Rubio
It's a feeling Deemah
The lover that you are [Marlon D & George Mena 08 Club] Pulse
Show me how good [Club] Arduini & Pagany featuring Vale Ducros
Call it deep [Original] Midway Strangers
What you won't do [House Device Remix] Grantorino featuring Shar'Ron

WELCOME to Episode 35, an up-tempo, funky set. I had great fun mixing this so I really hope you enjoy it too. First up is Turkish DJ, producer and bass guitarist Ali Sural, with his delicious “Heavenly”. When Ali isn’t creating smooth house music he’ll be making jingles. http://www.myspace.com/alisural Our cover artist is DJ/producer Licious K who is based in the Netherlands. Here we feature his excellent “All for you”. http://www.liciousk.com/ Listen out for Chris Achesona and Scott Garland’s project Daddy Funk 45. On “It ain’t you” they create the perfect canvas for Drifters vocalist Victor Bynoe. Victor joined The Drifters in 2003 and is still part of the current line-up. (If you don’t know them – ask your Dad!) http://www.thedrifters.co.uk/ The intriguing combination of Swiss audio engineer Steven Stone and Juillard scholar David Bruce Whitley has produced the deep house track “Free to go” which I’ve included here in its Deep Headz dub mix. http://www.myspace.com/djstevenstone Finally, you’ll catch David “Redsoul” Wareing’s partnership with vocalist Andrea Love (remember The Praise Cats’ “Shined on me”?). Their “Heat you up (Melt you down)”, engineered by E-Smoove, is getting great reactions wherever it’s played. http://www.playmoremusic.co.uk/

Thanks for all the comments and reactions over the past couple of weeks. Episode 34’s DEF mix was our most popular to date. Hi Sean, Lindsey, Armando, Tormod, Fred . . .everyone. I will try and keep in touch. Here’s 35’s full playlist:

Happy Easter and welcome to Episode 34 which is an electro-tinged (and slightly cheesey!) DEF set, full of good stuff.

Up first is Brit Rupert Romaro who usually styles himself as the Romaro Brothers, when he works in partnership with latin percussionist Miles Havana. Young Rupert (21), from Bournemouth is a classically trained musician having earned his props on the piano, plus he has a degree in Music Technology.

I loved Dutch DJ and producer Funkerman’s “Speed up” when it first came out in 2006. Here it is again given a 2008 makeover. http://www.myspace.com/djfunkerman If you like and recognise Funkerman’s style you might not be surprised to note that he set up Flamingo Records with Fedde Le Grand, and also had a hand in the classic “Let me think about it” by Ida Corr. Funkerman is playing various sets during the Winter Music Conference in Miami starting on March 25th at the Defected gig. More details on WMC at http://www.wintermusicconference.com/thelist/list.php?official

Probably my favourite track from Episode 34 is “Superlove” from Zentribe featuring Linda Newman. People arrive at dance music from many backgrounds, folk isn’t usually one of them, but that was Denny Newman’s original musical direction. Now living in Spain with wife Linda and fellow collaborator Lesh Gasiorek, this trio make up Zentribe. This track has been around for a couple of months but still not achieved the recognition it deserves. http://www.myspace.com/zentribe

I can’t tell you much about the excellent “Loove” by Kidz & Palmez except they’re signed to Italian Loud Bit Records. Also from Italy, Dino and Stef of Phunk Investigation are a prolific duo, consistently producing excellent dance music; “Crazy diamond” is no exception. Download their latest DJ compilation mix here: http://www.yousendit.com/transfer.php?action=batch_download&batch_id=T1RUK0duQzMxUURIRGc9PQ (It’s a You Send It link. I hope it works!)

Also listen out for one of my all time favourite tracks “Fired up”, originally by the Funky Green Dogs. Here it’s been re-worked by Denis the Menace and Big World. See you in a few weeks. X F*

WELCOME to a brand new set. I hope you enjoy it.

Our cover artist is Anglo-American vocalist Peyton. Listen to the voice and you won’t be surprised to learn that he comes from a strong gospel background http://www.myspace.com/theofficialpeytonmusic in fact he aptly describes himself as “son of a preacher man”. See the face and anyone in the UK may recognise him from the local version of Queer Eye for the Straight Guy (sadly the UK re-make was never quite as good as the US original – why?) This uplifting track sets the mood for the whole mix with The Temple Dynasty’s “Keep rising” also cut from the gospel mould http://www.myspace.com/templedynasty.

I’m a lover of most kinds of music, and so don’t be surprised when I tell you I’m a fan too of American Idol. David Archuleta’s performance this week will take some beating http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ovborwDaooQ . Meanwhile here in London we’re building up to the Eurovision Song Contest in May. Andy Abraham’s winning song was my personal favourite http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rWnQ_81n3YE though on balance I guess Michelle Gayle’s entry http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AiiwGioO4YE would probably have had a better chance of winning. Let’s see if we can narrowly avoid “nil points” once more.

See you again in a few weeks, meanwhile here’s this episode’s track listing in full:

Secret love [Extended] Jed Set

JODY Watley is our cover artist with her club chart-topping cover of Chic’s 1979 “I want your love”. The track is from the “Makeover” album she released more than a year ago featuring a host of re-recordings of classic tracks. Here she re-surfaces with a Thomas Gold mix, though back in 2006 my favourite was a stripped down Masi and Mello mix. In a similar vein there’s a new spin to Alexander O’Neal’s “Saturday love” as he duets with UK singer Bianca Lindgren http://www.myspace.com/biancalindgren . I also find I’m listening to at least the third re-release of The Absolute’s “There will come a day” (but it still sounds good) which was originally a vehicle for Chicago born jazz/gospel singer Suzanne Palmer http://suzannepalmer.com/

I hope you enjoy this disco-influenced DEF set. See you again in a few weeks. X F*

FELIZ NATAL, Happy Christmas. And here’s another chunk of funk. Our friend Morten Trust pops up again remixing our opening track and cover artist Indira Khan. This hour + mix in Episode 30 is actually a cut down version of a much longer set – I was spoilt for choice with so much excellent soulful house music around at the moment. I hope you enjoy it. Have a wonderful holiday and I’ll see you again soon. X F*
