WELCOME to Episode 35, an up-tempo, funky Bar Grooves set. I had great fun mixing this so I really hope you enjoy it too. First up is Turkish DJ, producer and bass guitarist Ali Sural, with his delicious “Heavenly”. When Ali isn’t creating smooth house music he’ll be making jingles. http://www.myspace.com/alisural Our cover artist is DJ/producer Licious K who is based in the Netherlands. Here we feature his excellent “All for you”. http://www.liciousk.com/ Listen out for Chris Achesona and Scott Garland’s project Daddy Funk 45. On “It ain’t you” they create the perfect canvas for Drifters vocalist Victor Bynoe. Victor joined The Drifters in 2003 and is still part of the current line-up. (If you don’t know them – ask your Dad!) http://www.thedrifters.co.uk/ The intriguing combination of Swiss audio engineer Steven Stone and Juillard scholar David Bruce Whitley has produced the deep house track “Free to go” which I’ve included here in its Deep Headz dub mix. http://www.myspace.com/djstevenstone Finally, you’ll catch David “Redsoul” Wareing’s partnership with vocalist Andrea Love (remember The Praise Cats’ “Shined on me”?). Their “Heat you up (Melt you down)”, engineered by E-Smoove, is getting great reactions wherever it’s played. http://www.playmoremusic.co.uk/

Thanks for all the comments and reactions over the past couple of weeks. Episode 34’s DEF mix was our most popular to date. Hi Sean, Lindsey, Armando, Tormod, Fred . . .everyone. I will try and keep in touch. Here’s 35’s full playlist:

Happy Easter and welcome to Episode 34 which is an electro-tinged (and slightly cheesey!) DEF set, full of good stuff.

Up first is Brit Rupert Romaro who usually styles himself as the Romaro Brothers, when he works in partnership with latin percussionist Miles Havana. Young Rupert (21), from Bournemouth is a classically trained musician having earned his props on the piano, plus he has a degree in Music Technology.

I loved Dutch DJ and producer Funkerman’s “Speed up” when it first came out in 2006. Here it is again given a 2008 makeover. http://www.myspace.com/djfunkerman If you like and recognise Funkerman’s style you might not be surprised to note that he set up Flamingo Records with Fedde Le Grand, and also had a hand in the classic “Let me think about it” by Ida Corr. Funkerman is playing various sets during the Winter Music Conference in Miami starting on March 25th at the Defected gig. More details on WMC at http://www.wintermusicconference.com/thelist/list.php?official

Probably my favourite track from Episode 34 is “Superlove” from Zentribe featuring Linda Newman. People arrive at dance music from many backgrounds, folk isn’t usually one of them, but that was Denny Newman’s original musical direction. Now living in Spain with wife Linda and fellow collaborator Lesh Gasiorek, this trio make up Zentribe. This track has been around for a couple of months but still not achieved the recognition it deserves. http://www.myspace.com/zentribe

I can’t tell you much about the excellent “Loove” by Kidz & Palmez except they’re signed to Italian Loud Bit Records. Also from Italy, Dino and Stef of Phunk Investigation are a prolific duo, consistently producing excellent dance music; “Crazy diamond” is no exception. Download their latest DJ compilation mix here: http://www.yousendit.com/transfer.php?action=batch_download&batch_id=T1RUK0duQzMxUURIRGc9PQ (It’s a You Send It link. I hope it works!)

Also listen out for one of my all time favourite tracks “Fired up”, originally by the Funky Green Dogs. Here it’s been re-worked by Denis the Menace and Big World. See you in a few weeks. X F*

This is the night [Hy2rogen] Rupert Romaro
Keep shining (Shining Star) [Smax & Gold] Pate No 1 featuring Lara Zola
Speed Up [Granite & Phunk Big Room Remix] Funkerman
Feedback [Jody Den Broeder] Janet Jackson
Superlove [Electro Mix] Zentribe featuring Linda Newman
Gimme your love [Klubjumpers] FIO
Looove [Original] Kidz & Palmez
The beat Floorshakers
Crazy diamond [Black truffle on the stage mix] Phunk Investigation
Be Together [P.Liassi & Tyrell] Supafly Inc.
Fired Up [Original] Denis The Menace & Big World

WELCOME to a brand new Bar Grooves set. I hope you enjoy it.

Our cover artist is Anglo-American vocalist Peyton. Listen to the voice and you won’t be surprised to learn that he comes from a strong gospel background http://www.myspace.com/theofficialpeytonmusic in fact he aptly describes himself as “son of a preacher man”. See the face and anyone in the UK may recognise him from the local version of Queer Eye for the Straight Guy (sadly the UK re-make was never quite as good as the US original – why?) This uplifting track sets the mood for the whole mix with The Temple Dynasty’s “Keep rising” also cut from the gospel mould http://www.myspace.com/templedynasty.

I’m a lover of most kinds of music, and so don’t be surprised when I tell you I’m a fan too of American Idol. David Archuleta’s performance this week will take some beating http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ovborwDaooQ . Meanwhile here in London we’re building up to the Eurovision Song Contest in May. Andy Abraham’s winning song was my personal favourite http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rWnQ_81n3YE though on balance I guess Michelle Gayle’s entry http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AiiwGioO4YE would probably have had a better chance of winning. Let’s see if we can narrowly avoid “nil points” once more.

See you again in a few weeks, meanwhile here’s this episode’s track listing in full:

Secret love [Extended] Jed Set
Light up the sky [Original] DJ Jani
Never give up [Classic Vocal] Peyton & The Rhythm Republic
Beautify me [Mosco's Beautiful Mix] Eternal Sunshine

JODY Watley is our cover artist with her club chart-topping cover of Chic’s 1979 “I want your love”. The track is from the “Makeover” album she released more than a year ago featuring a host of re-recordings of classic tracks. Here she re-surfaces with a Thomas Gold mix, though back in 2006 my favourite was a stripped down Masi and Mello mix. In a similar vein there’s a new spin to Alexander O’Neal’s “Saturday love” as he duets with UK singer Bianca Lindgren http://www.myspace.com/biancalindgren . I also find I’m listening to at least the third re-release of The Absolute’s “There will come a day” (but it still sounds good) which was originally a vehicle for Chicago born jazz/gospel singer Suzanne Palmer http://suzannepalmer.com/

I hope you enjoy this disco-influenced DEF set. See you again in a few weeks. X F*

Saturday love [Soulshaker] Alexander O'Neal featuring Bianca Lindgren
Get down [Warren Clarke] Todd Terry All Stars featuring Tara MacDonald
Come back and stay [Original] Lambert & Grinaert

RESPONDING to requests for previous editions, here’s Episode 1 of the F*Monday podcast. In reality I don’t think there was an Episode 1. This whole thing started as a means for me to share mixes with my other DJ pals and just kind of grew. But I still only do it because I love music. It’s not for profit. And it’s all done in my spare time. I hope you enjoy it.

This mix does come from October 2006 when I started the podcast and features some great soulful house tracks. The Legendary Etta James is included in a Quentin Harris package. I love the fact that Etta’s real name is Jamesetta. Brand New Heavies vocalist N’dea Davenport http://www.myspace.com/ndeadavenport also makes an appearance on the fantastic “One day my love”. Also look out for Leee John http://www.leeejohn.com/ on “Round and round”. I have fond memories of Leee during his time in Imagination. Finally I must mention a great track from our cover artist Leela James http://www.myspace.com/leelajames from her 2005 album “A change is gonna come”. Listen to the lyrics!

See you again in a few weeks. X F*

Have a wonderful holiday and I’ll see you again soon. X F*

ANOTHER musical journey which takes in the sights and sounds of danced-up versions of guitar pop and r ‘n’ b, before launching into disco and house.

Cover-featured DJ genius Seamus Haji http://www.myspace.com/djseamushaji has excelled himself with his remix of US band Orson’s http://www.myspace.com/orson current hit “Ain’t no party”. Orson are soon to tour here in the UK and hit London on 6th December. Another mention must go to the cheeky “Boogie makes a splash” from Monster Taxi aka Miami’s Jason Klein. http://myspace.com/monstertaxi305 I think I know what the lyrics are about . . . ! And finally one of my favourite recent pop songs was “Place in my heart” by David Jordan. Episode 29 contains a remix by Stonebridge. I’M LOVING the music right now, and at the risk of sounding a little self-indulgent, this mix exemplifies the very best in dancefloor house and soul. Quite by chance there are two JORDAN RIVERA tracks at the front of my box this week. Jordan hails from Chile but grew up in Holland where he learned his musical skills. The two tracks in question are “Hot house music” and “Don’t bring me down.” http://www.myspace.com/jordanriverarios Another name which I see appearing in my mixes time after time is RAUL RINCON. Raul’s latin nome de plume hides a classically trained native German who is allegedly quite handy on the old church organ when he’s not firing things up in the clubs http://www.raulrincon.org/ Here Raul is on unmistakeable remix duty for Velvet’s “Fix me”. Continuing the run of doubles is Danish artist MORTEN TRUST http://www.trustmusic.dk/index06.html
who also shows that new soulful house is coming from many exciting places around the world. Morten is a musician, DJ and producer and here you’ll find his trademark sound on “Soulmagic 2007” and “Keep me satisfied” featuring Angie Brown.

I’ve filed this set under “Bar Grooves” but it really sits somewhere between that and the DEF sound as it starts off with a soulful vibe and leaves you with some deep and funky house. I loved the journey. I hope you do to. X F*

DO YOU know what I mean when I say that the usual mix of electro and disco isn’t doing it for me right now? Instead, I’m feeling much more in a housey mood, so I hope you don’t mind if I tempt you with another Bar Grooves set, this one being Episode 27. It’s not quite all down-tempo this episode, in fact you’ll find it segues into a serious session of funky house.

Highlights for me include “When summer comes” by the innovative Frooty Collective. You can check out their uplifting house style at http://www.frootyrecords.com/ (though the vid’s a bit cheesey!); and what about that “Everybody’s doin’ it” by the impressively-named Bobbleheads who are actually Eddie Amador and Erik Wikman http://www.myspace.com/ericwikman who you’ll probably remember for the classic “In the music”. Also checkout Polish remix duo Wawa’s http://www.myspace.com/wawamusicwawa version of “Te quiero” by Rize.

Thanks for all the comments and encouragement. Please keep the feedback coming. Don’t forget to put a comment on iTunes. See you soon. Love F*

TODAY our clubs go smoke-free. . I’ve only experienced smoke-free clubbing once before, when I was on holiday in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It was a little weird at first, but I quickly got used to it. I confess I’m an ex-smoker, but in pondering the effects clean air will have on clubs I’m not judging. I suspect without smoke some clubs are going to smell pretty disgusting, because the smoke usually disguises other smells; stale beer and alcohol to name but a few. I’ve thrown at least one pair of jeans away after a night out because I couldn’t get rid of the grime from the floor which is presumably a mixture of spilt fluids and condensed smoke. And for those who continue to smoke, imagine you’re ‘avin it large in a club under some railway arches monged at 7am on a Sunday, and you have to pop out for a fag in the full glare of the summer’s early morning sun!

EPISODE 22 is a bit of mixed bag, starting with an electro feel and ending with some delicious funky house. In fact two of my favourite tracks are right at the end of this mix, “Speed up” by Dutch DJ Funkerman (http://www.myspace.com/djfunkerman) who is pals with Fedde Le Grand, and “Transistor radio” by Fragmente which is the brainchild of ex Artful Dodger Pete Devereux. (http://www.myspace.com/fragmente) Fragmente’s myspace page very kindly includes a link to download their very own 25-track compilation, including five of their very own Fragmente tracks. Disfruta! I CONFESS I didn’t recognise one artist in this set, but there are some great tracks nevertheless. Is that because this style of music rarely crosses over these days? YES there was an Episode 19 (trance), but because the F*Monday podcast is now every couple of weeks, 19 has been posted on http://www.beatmixing.com where you’ll find it on rotation on the Translucent internet radio channel. So Episode 20 is a return to disco house with some soon to be classics I’m sure. For example, Ne-Yo’s “Because of you” surprised me because it’s so damned commercial. There’s another heavy Freemasons influence with one track credited to them (“Nothing but a heartache”) and another delivered as a remix (“Take me 2 the sun”). There’s also contributions from the trusted talents of Haji and Emmanuel, The Soulseekerz, and Moto Blanco. But my favourite has to be the Muttonheads and Mathieu Bouthier’s “Make your own kind of music” based on a sample from the Mama Cass track of the same name. Enjoy! Feedback to fmonday@hotmail.com. See you in a couple of weeks X F*
