Apologies for the recent absence — I’ve been finishing my second major musical project, Songs For Every Heartbeat, out now on all streaming and download platforms. If you’re curious about the other side of my musical taste, it’s not disco — more R&B and retro soul, with touches of deep house, psychedelic rock and even a hint of country. But for now, back to the disco. And I’ve slipped one of my own tracks into this mix — a remake of Maybe I’m Gay, with The Velvet Tecnokrats reworking the original protest pop into a deep house groove.

Episode 53: Locked On Disco December 2025

Hey - sorry I missed you in November, but I was busy working on new material, and I've included a couple of exclusive new tracks here for you in this mix. First up is a remix of a track from my first album. The track is called "Maybe I'm Gay". It's a song about self-empowerment and is for anyone who has ever felt othered. It's from the album "The Gift" which you can stream and download everywhere. Here's a link to Apple Music, and to Spotify. All proceeds from this album go to Alzheimer's Research. Right now I'm putting the finishing touches to a Spanish language version of the album. Each track is uniquely Spanish and I've used the language to create a new interpretation of each song. In fact some tracks are quite different. Plus I've written and recorded some new material only in Spanish. It's all scheduled for release on Friday 23rd January 2026. Watch this space.

In December's Locked On Disco you'll also hear new tracks from Daisuke Miyamoto, John Frisco, Sgt Slick, Funk 78, Seamus Haji, Dr Packer, Adelphi Music Factory, and Block & Crown. And the album? Yes, it's not a disco album at all. Far from it. It's called "The Gift" and I've described it as a gay man's musical anthology of the queer lived experience. Episode 51: Just Love Me - making a song about living with dementia and raising awareness and money for charity

I hope you don't mind me sharing my continuing journey in raising awareness and money for dementia research. I'm releasing an album of my music (and it's not disco!) on 10th October 2025. Here I talk about my fears of writing a song about dementia and getting it wrong. I did care for two close relatives with dementia, but I will never know what it was like from their point of view.

The first track from the album is out now. It's called Maybe I'm Gay. It's available to stream and download everywhere. Here's the link to Apple Music.

All proceeds from the album, called The Gift, are in aid of the charity, Alzheimer’s Research UK. It is estimated that 982,000 people are living with dementia in the UK today, rising to 1.4 million by 2040. In 2022 it was the leading cause of death in the UK. Globally the World Health Organisation estimates that 57 million people have dementia. New cases are occurring at the rate of nearly 10 million each year, which breaks down to about one new case every 3.2 seconds. In the UK, the estimated economic impact of dementia in 2024 was £42.5 billion, a figure that is expected to more than double by 2040.

(I hope they don't mind but I may have added a bit of O'Jays' magic back as my humble homage to legends Gamble and Huff.) There's fresh releases from Dr Packer and Yogi, and Dr Packer again with Abyss Deep Sound Lab, DP Thompson, and Lowkeytheory, who further funk up War's already funktastic 1977 hit Galaxy. Plus Seamus Haji and Kathy Brown, Moodena, HP Vince, and Block & Crown. And original disco classics from George Benson, Chaka Khan and Luther Vandross. All mixed with love in London.

It's not a disco album. But there's plenty of tunes to move to. And I hope to be moved by.

Created in collaboration with AI tools, The Gift is both an act of self-discovery and a creative experiment — a reminder that music can be a mirror, reflecting who we are and what we hope to become.

In this latest short podcast interlude I share my journey to creating Maybe I'm gay including all previously unreleased versions and demos. Hopefully it will be an interesting insight into the inner workings of the latest AI music technology.

I've been a DJ in various forms including radio since I was a teenager, and I always used to say it was the best job in the world, getting to listen to all kinds of music. I think I've also been a frustrated musical artist of some kind: I wanted to engineer and produce and have trained on various DAWs. My musicianship has been limited though - I can't really sing and I'm a rudimentary keyboard player - but I can write and originally trained as a journalist after leaving school. So I've been putting whatever writing skills I may possess to the test by writing lyrics and using them as prompts for AI music with some fascinating results. In fact I've spent the past month or so working on songs. At the time of writing I have an album of material completed, with the first track - a single - scheduled for release on 29th August on all the major platforms including Spotify and Apple Music. It will be automatically added to your Spotify new releases if you click here. Another single is scheduled to come out about a month later with the album pencilled for release on Friday 10th October. One of the surprises for me was the style of music I've ended up creating - not my usual dance music at all. The album does contain tracks that will get you moving or set your toes tapping, but there's an equal number of singer/songwriter tracks that I hope are more contemplative. The whole song writing process was incredibly cathartic, in fact I'd go so far as to say, it was like therapy. It's a scary thing sharing in song all your previously private thoughts and experiences, so please don't be too harsh on me. And as importantly, why not have a go yourself. I hope you enjoy it. Happy New Year and thanks for downloading my favourite selections from The Disco Podcast's 2024 sets. And there was something powerful about February's mix, because that was by far your most popular download of the year. Quite a few tracks from that set have made it onto this Best Of, including Anane, Dave Leatherman, Paolo Bardelli, Saturday Love, Hold Tight and Ken@Work. 2024 definitely had more of a soulful disco vibe and that's reflected by edits and remakes of the inimitable Lou Rawls and Roberta Flack and Donny Hathaway, plus my personal favourite track of the year from Tamiko Jones - "Let it flow". Episode 38: Locked on Quincy: a disco tribute to the musical legend Quincy Jones

Quincy Delight Jones Junior was born in Chicago in 1933. At High School in Seattle he became an accomplished trumpeter, and then focused on music with a scholarship to Boston's Berklee College of Music. After college he worked with a number of orchestras and bands until in the 1960s becoming Frank Sinatra's arranger and conductor, notably leading the recording of the 1966 live album "Sinatra at the Sands" with the Count Basie Orchestra. A background with big bands, orchestras, and jazz followed him through his career and into our disco era where Quincy's signature production features bold brass, lush strings, hypnotic percussion and complex vocal arrangements. He met Michael Jackson when they both worked on the film "The Wiz". Michael invited Quincy to produce his upcoming solo album, but the record label objected, saying Quincy was "too jazzy". Michael insisted, and the result, "Off The Wall" propelled them both to mega stardom.

Here I've gathered my favourite Quincy produced, arranged and written tracks which have themselves already been lovingly reproduced by disco leaders Dr Packer, The Reflex, Loshmi, Pete Le Freq and more, plus, unusually for me, some original recordings, which itself is very telling. No-one can even try to improve Quincy's original "Billie Jean." And I couldn't find anyone who's touched "Ease on down the road" . . . yet.

And 40 years ago this month Wham! released "Everything she wants" which starts this set with with the authentically updated Dolls Combers Tribute Remix. As far as we know George Michael did everything himself on the original, playing all the instruments and singing all the vocals, so technically it's not a Wham! track at all. Other tracks featured in this mix are Larry Funk's "Together", Nicole's "Rock the house", A-Trak's "Like I said" (which I might have changed a bit ;-), Stephane Deschezeaux, and DJ B1's "Lovin' you" along with some delicious edits of chunky disco treats. Four of his podcast's episodes take you on a fascinating musical journey from Nazi occupied Paris to disco dominating American Top 40 radio. Definitely worth downloading.

A nudisco celebration of the music of Philadelphia International Records and the role it played in the development of disco. Founded in 1971 by Kenneth Gamble and Leon Huff, the label’s original vision was to rival Berry Gordy's Motown organisation. Gamble and Huff were also responsible for writing many of the label's greatest hits, which often featured their own in-house orchestra MFSB (or Mother Father Sister Brother). Gamble and Huff have also been activists supporting the black community and improving south Philadelphia. They created Universal Companies which in 2003 partnered with others in a $100 million plan to construct and renovate 400 homes. Together they have written over 3,000 songs producing 175 gold and platinum records, making them some of the most prolific songwriters of all time. Next year will mark the 50th anniversary of the creation of Salsoul Records, perhaps the most recogniseably sampled catalogue in the history of disco. The label name came from the US urban latino community who were listening to a mash-up of salsa and soul, and it was established by brothers Joseph, Kenneth and Stan Cayre. They created a disco genre which was influenced by Philadelphia International, in fact they hired some of Philadelphia's musicians to help develop their own signature uplifting orchestral strings and brass sound. That sound is perhaps best exemplified by the many tracks recorded by The Salsoul Orchestra, who also backed many of their other artists. And in this special mix you'll hear many of the Salsoul Orchestra's best performances. Enjoy over an hour of my Salsoul favourites, given nu disco makeovers by some great DJs and producers including Dr Packer, Dmitri from Paris, The Reflex, Dave Lee, and Loshmi. ENJOY.

Lockdown Disco Classics

Hello from a hot and sunny London, and I've just celebrated taking our first steps out of lockdown by going up into the loft and digging out a box of 12" vinyl disco classics. I've chosen the lesser-played versions of these mega-hits: some from the original days of disco, and some which have been produced more recently. Overall I feel the set has quite a silky, orchestral feel to it, including Joey Negro's delicately balanced rendering of strings, pianos, vocal harmonies and loving breakdowns of the O'Jays "I love music", Bebu Silvetti's crazy keyboard skills and unrivaled disco percussion on his "Spring rain", and my personal set favourite, Dimitri from Paris' epic cinematic Super Disco Orchestra remix of Odyssey's "Native New Yorker". It's an amazing instrumental version, and I was tempted to drop in some of the vocals just for old times' sake, but - well what do you think? This track makes me so happy I just cry every time I hear it. Seriously, I've got a lump in my throat and tears in my eyes right now! Maybe because I was lucky enough to meet Odyssey when I was just a teenager. Somehow I had managed to persuade them to let me interview them for the hospital radio station where I volunteered. They'd done a gig at Nottingham's Rock City and I waited in the foyer of their hotel well into the early hours of the morning to meet them. I'm still so star-struck I've got no idea what I spoke to them about in the interview, but I recall they were charming. Thanks Billie, Lilian and Louisa. So, make some space, invite your five friends and dance, dance, dance, the two metre lock-down special. Lockdown disco: the best stay at home disco party

Hi. How are you? I hope you and your loved ones are coping with the lockdown. Here in London we're into the third week of isolation, and thought I'd try and improve the mood by mixing up some great disco tracks so that we can all safely party on at home. And here they are; over two and a half hours of original, new, remixed and edited disco, mixed with love in London. Some of my personal favourites include our set starter, Bob Sinclar's collaboration with Robbie Williams, given a total disco makeover by Discoslap; Again & again by DJ Mark Brickman; Arthur Prysock's "When love is new" lovingly edited by DJ Laurel, a great track with a great pedigree with Gamble & Huff as writers and John Davis on production - lush. And there's a couple of tracks that pre-date the disco era including Frankie Valli's "The Night" which in its original 1972 form was a massive Northern Soul hit and features here slowed a little and disconated by Lolita. Then there's the legendary Dusty Springfield and her 1969 hit "Son of a preacher man" given the 4/4 treatment and a new funky bassline by Jakob Trice. And I love Rena Scott's 1979 hit "Super lover" with a subtle edit by DJ XS. Plus classics from Michael, Chaka, and Thelma. Enjoy!
